The End of the affair

Synopsis Maurice Bendrix, a writer, is obsessed with learning the reason that his married mistress, Sarah Miles, abruptly and without explanation ended their affair. Bendrix is convinced that Sarah dumped him for another lover, and hires a private detective to trail her and finally to steal Sarah's diary for the past several years. He learns that when he was in danger, during a bomb attack of the London Blitz, Sarah prayed and struck a deal with God: she promised she would stop sinning if God would save Maurice's life.
